Black Forest cargo marks a milestone

By Tim Saunders

SYDENHAMS Ltd, the family-owned timber and builders merchants with branches throughout Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and on the Isle of Wight, has just imported the first cargo of softwood from the Black Forest into Britain - according to their shippers in Germany.

The MV Anmar-S discharged over 600 packs at Poole and these will be distributed throughout their various branches.

Sydenhams has been trading from their site next to the lifting bridge in Poole since 1874.

The present owners, Charles and James Sherborne, are the fourth generation of the family which acquired the company in 1920.

Although the company has its history firmly in timber importing, it can now supply everything required in the building industry, including design and manufacture of timber-framed buildings, kitchens and bathrooms and now has its own plant hire business.

Acquisitions - A F Shearn, Bath

In January 2007 Sydenhams acquired the long established Bath Builders Merchant, A F Shearn Ltd.
The site is not large, & the current layout does not allow for the full Sydenhams range of material to be stocked as the photo's show.

The first priority is therefore to extend the showroom & create more yard space. This however poses more than the usual number of problems as the branch is built over an old stone mine.

At the time of going to press racking has been installed in the yard and modifications have been made to the main building, in order to increase the range of timber.

However the work to rebuild the showroom & increase the size of the yard is awaiting the outcome of geological surveys, work is progressing well.

In the mean time Ian Sutton, branch manager and his team are getting on with increasing sales from the present facilities.

Acquisitions - PPS (Softwoods) Ltd

Following on from the acquisition of A F Shearn, PPS (Softwoods) was acquired. The business was well known to Sydenhams, being located just across the other side of town from our Wickham branch (And Wickham's a pretty small town!) Owner Alan Ediss had reached the end of the lease on the premises and had to decide between renewing for a further period or selling the business. Fortunately he chose to sell, and chose Sydenhams (What a sensible chap!).

Alan has joined the team at Wickham, as have the majority of former PPS staff. Together with Graham Stonehill and the Sydenhams Wickham team Alan has retained most of his old customers and is selling them more wood than ever! Graham Stonehill is delighted with the result and was interested to see that one of Alan’s major customers was Hamworthy Engineering in Poole, who are almost on the doorstep of Timber Direct.
