The Biocidal Product Regulations

Labelling of treated Timber

The Biocidal Product Regulations (BPR) replaced the Biocidal Product Directive (BPD) on 1st September 2013. The Regulations are gradually being phased in, according to when the active substances in the preservative products used to treat wood are added to a list of approved substances.

From the 1st September 2013, the Regulations required that treated timber should be labelled with a list of the biocides present in the preservative used and information on the safe use of the treated article. The brand name or precise formulation of the preservative is not required.

Whilst the default requirement is for labelling of the treated article itself, the Regulations also state that where necessary, because of the size or the function of the treated article, the labelling may be printed on packaging, on the instructions for use, or on the warranty.
