Panel Perfection: A Step-By-Step Guide to DIY Wall Panelling

Wall panelling flatters almost any interior style, adding texture and character to whichever room it’s in. There are many reasons someone would choose to panel their home, such as covering uneven surfaces or hiding electrics and plumbing. However, having panelling fitted professionally can be quite expensive.

There are endless designs but to keep the steps simple, we are going to walk you through the process of installing a classic square panel design. If you want to add a hint of luxury to your home, keep reading!

1. Planning and Measuring

The first and possibly the most important step is to measure the length and width of the wall(s), noting any fittings that you will need to avoid, such as light switches.

On some paper, draw a detailed plan of your design and note the measurements you took, ensuring the horizontal and vertical gaps between the panels are equal. Also make note of the size of the panels so as to ensure accuracy when you transfer the plan to the wall.

Using masking tape, a tape measure and a laser level, transfer the plan from your piece of paper onto the wall according to your actual measurements. You will need to decide whether to tape within the measured lines or outside of them so that you don’t install the panelling onto the masking tape. To achieve a polished result, we also suggest removing any existing skirting or architrave from the wall.

2. Cut the Timber to Length

Before cutting the timber, check your measurements one more time to avoid any mistakes. Using either a hand saw and a mitre box or a mitre saw, cut your panels to length according to the measurements you took.

Alternatively, we at Sydenhams supply timber, which can be custom cut at selected branches to suit your panelling needs. We would recommend using hardwood for this kind of project.

Before applying the panels to the wall, sand the rough edges down. It will be easier to install if the edges are clean cut and smooth.

3. Install the Panels

Nailing the panels to the wall is considered to be the best way to apply them. For extra security, you can also apply adhesive, but this is not necessary. Remember to take note of where there might be cables behind the wall before you start nailing. Once you have attached all the panels, remove the masking tape.

4. Finish!

If you have any imperfections on your panelling, don’t panic! Caulk, an acrylic filler, is effective at concealing these. As well as this, it’ll make the panels look cohesive and give a clean finish. Click here to view our range of caulk on our website!

Once you have waited 24 hours for the caulk to dry, you can paint the room and add whatever kind of style you fancy! Then all that’s left to do is admire your hard work and your new and sophisticated room.
