A Guide to Buying Lawn Tools

Everyone wants a really beautifully maintained garden but it requires the right amount of care. However, with the right tools, a little effort should go a long way, so keep reading for a breakdown of our best lawn garden tools…

Types of Manual Tools

Lawn Rake

A rake has many uses, but mainly they’re useful for aerating the soil and removing leaves, garden debris and moss from the lawn. Lawn rakes have fine teeth which are especially gentle on grass. It is easier to scarify the lawn with one of these metal rakes in the autumn or the springtime when the garden debris is most likely wet or rotted.

Lawn Shears

Lawn shears are particularly useful for tidying the edges of a lawn and trimming grass in areas that are hard to reach with a lawn mower. Being able to cut your grass in these difficult to reach places gives your garden an immaculate finish.

Lawn Edgers

Lawn edgers are used to cut into the lawn to sharpen or create new straight edges in your garden. Edging your lawn is beneficial by preventing the lawn grass from invading the garden beds. This makes the garden look perfectly organised.

Garden Roller

Before sowing grass seeds, a garden roller helps to prepare the lawn by flattening and levelling the soil. It’s also used to flatten the ground prior to laying artificial grass, and works towards preventing your lawn from developing sunken areas later on.

Garden rollers are available from our Hire Centres.

Types of Powered Tools

Lawn Aerator

To stimulate root growth and improve drainage by allowing air into compacted soil areas. Whether you use a manual or powered aerator, the process is still the same – the lawn is spiked with hollow spikes to allow air to get in. It’s best done in the Autumn time.

We have both manual and powered lawn aerators available from our Hire Centres.

Lawn Scarifier

This machine uses steel blades to cut out thatch, which is a layer in the soil of accumulated organic matter. It’s important to remove thatch as it risks the health and texture of your grass. The cutting action of the scarifier also prunes the grass by cutting it downwards instead of cutting across as a lawn mower does.

We have lawn scarifiers available in our Hire Centres.

Lawn Mower

Lawn mowers are absolutely key to keeping your garden looking tidy and healthy. If your grass has grown too long to mow it straight away, we recommend first trimming it with a strimmer; both of which are also available to hire from our Hire Centres.
