Sydenhams - Your local and independent timber and building suppliers

Brief history of Sydenhams

Horse and CartSydenhams Ltd was founded at the Poole premises, as Sydenhams & Butler, in 1874 as a timber importer and merchant. The company's name was changed to J T Sydenham & Co Ltd a little later after Mr Butler left the company.

About 1920 Mr John Sherborne acquired control of the company and it continued to thrive under his guidance. After his death, his two sons John and Donald continued the family ownership and then John's two sons Ian and Richard saw the company through to the modern time. Ian's two sons Charles and James are the present owners.

The history of the company is firmly in timber but the owners did acquire a number of builders' merchants over the years which continued to trade under their own names.

Leonard ForkliftIn 1999 the company name was changed to the present title and all the associated companies (Blanchard & Burgess, Hudson & Martin etc) were merged into Sydenhams to form the present family owned and very independent timber and builders' merchant.

Charles and James Sherborne set about growing the company both by acquisition and building new sites to the present day where we have 16 branches throughout Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire Somerset and Isle of Wight trading in everything required for the building industry including design manufacture and assembly of timber frame properties.
